Using Sage

Medical literature on Sage contains a few reports of inflammation of the lips and lining of the mouth associated with ingestion of sage tea. Sage contains relatively high levels of one toxic chemical (thujone). In large amounts, thujone cause a variety of symptoms culminating in convulsions, but the heat of sage infusions eliminates much of the chemical, so the risk
from recommended amounts of sage infusion is negligible.

Some studies suggest sage oil may stimulate the uterus, possibly explaining its traditional use in menstruation promotion. Pregnant women should not take medicinal doses. Other women might try it to bring on their periods. Sage oil might cause toxicity and should not be ingested.

Sage should be used in medicinal amounts only in consultation with your doctor. If sage causes minor discomforts, such as lip or mouth inflammation, use less or stop using it. Let your doctor know if you experience any unpleasant effects or if the symptoms for which the herb is being used do not improve significantly in two weeks.
