How Much Thought Do You Put Into Your Mattress?
January 23rd, 2007 (Sleep)
As with the rest of your bedroom, make your bed inviting. I like the look of a bed you can sink into like a cloud. You might prefer the crisp, more tailored look. Whatever you choose, it should say “sleep.”
If you’re buying a new mattress, make sure you have the option of bringing it back after you try it out. Five minutes in the showroom is not enough; anything is comfortable for five minutes. My husband and I prefer different degrees of firmness, so we purchased an air-filled mattress that can be adjusted on each side to suit the sleeper. I have a friend whose husband wakes her up tossing and turning, so she purchased a mattress that absorbs motion. If you have such special needs, shop carefully.
Take good care of your mattress. Every four to six months, flip and rotate it to even out wear. Kill germs with a disinfectant spray, then vacuum top and sides with the upholstery attachment. Also vacuum the box spring to eliminate all the allergens and dust mites. This should take about twenty minutes.
