Exercise Is Good for the Young
February 21st, 2007 (Health & Fitness)
People who are under the age of 20-years-old are naturally more flexible, have higher metabolic rates and more energy. This does not mean that these people do not need to exercise appropriately in order to avoid injury and obesity while building strength and endurance and staying fit.
Today there are a lot of electronic alternatives that cause people in this age group to exercise less than they should. This is important because during these formative years individuals lay the groundwork for the rest of their lives.
Children grow bored quickly whenever the routines have been designed for adults. It is important to understand that this does not mean that your children have to be involved in organized group sports. There are a lot of things that children can do like go for a job with an adult, play a game of tennis, go swimming, learn how to golf, take martial arts, ride their bike, or join a dance or gymnastics class.
If something is inconsistent or hypocritical then your child will be sensitive to this. For this reason you need to take your own advice and make sure that you also exercise. Of course, this is also a great way in which you can spend quality time with your child away from home, doing an activity that is beneficial to the both of you. This also allows you as the parent to ensure that your child is exercising safely.
As with any other routine, if it causes pain, even the day after, then you will be less likely to continue. Therefore, you really should keep things simple and build up the difficulty and length of time gradually. While children are more flexible, they do need to warm-up and gently stretch before they engage in vigorous exercise. Spending just a few minutes doing static and dynamic stretching will help them to avoid injuring themselves.
An exercise routine should also take into account your child’s age.
For those children who are between the age of 4 and 7-years-old, you should primarily focus upon developing good coordination, balance and motor skills. Children naturally enjoy games like jumping rope and hopscotch that will help them with these things.
When a child turns 8-years-old, exercise should become more vigorous so that their metabolism stays active and food does not turn into fat. Adults need to guide children in this area so that they can build good habits without injuring themselves. You should also know that weight machines are a bad idea for pre-teens because they are so risky. On the other hand, gymnastics is a great activity because it helps build basic motor skills and balance while keeping your child’s endocrine system healthy and active.
Once a child becomes a teenager, there are a lot of options available. This is because they now have the basic bone and muscle structure that allows them to be involved with high performance activity. Of course, your teenager can still get injured if you do not provide proper guidance. Most teenagers are inclined to roughhouse. As a parent it is your “job” to provide them with an outlet that channels all of their energy and independence into goals that are achievable, such as: fitness, endurance and high scores.
