Inevitably when the presentation software comes up on the screen, the lights dim, some people begin to tune out. After all, it's nice and dark. Some people know what will be said and others don't really care. Some get irritated, particularly when the presenter simply reads the slides. Some will surreptitiously text their friends during the presentation. Others won't bother to hide. While a small circle of people around the presenter may look attentive, a significant number of people will not be, which means the time spent in the presentation has not been terribly productive.

Many cities have neighborhoods of valuable older houses that have been snapped up. Prices in these neighborhoods are high. Often nearby are houses of a similar era, but the neighborhood is not as prestigious. These transitional neighborhoods have older families who have been there for years if not generations, houses owned by absentee landlords who are not particularly picky about their renters, and people who want an old house but don't have the money for the prestigious neighborhood.

All of us have a desire for control in our lives. Control means that we can influence events enough that we can predict the future. Since not being able to predict the future is scary, we strongly desire control not just over big things such as what we do at work, but also the little things such as how the dishes get washed.

Sometimes a piece of our mind rebels against a task. It makes life miserable. Instead of reading the research article you are supposed to, you find yourself distracted by all the wonders of the internet or by all the things you have to do or even by how nice it would be if you mopped the floor right now. The article either does not get read or you “read” it, looking at words, but not really comprehending it.

Positions of authority have, of course, no guarantee that their occupants will actually be good leaders. In fact, for some, the right to control other people is so alluring that any thought of doing something different remains far away from consciousness. Effective leaders can take situations that are bad and turn them around to the good, yet, as will be seen, this must be done by balancing one's own control with the right of employees to have some say over what they do in their lives, including their work.
